CSS - Comments
CSS - Comments
In CSS, comments are useful in adding explanatory notes or annotations within your stylesheet that are not interpreted as styling instructions by the web browser. CSS comments are intended for the benefit of developers and are ignored by the browser when rendering a web page. They are useful in documentation, debugging, etc.
In CSS, there are two main ways to create comments:
Single-line Comments: Single-line comments are created using /* to start the comment and */ to end it.
Multi-line Comments: Multi-line comments allow you to add comments that span multiple lines. They are also enclosed within /* and */.
While using <style> element, you may use <!-- --> to hide CSS from the browser. Though this is not recommended.
Syntax
CSS comments can be placed wherever white space is allowed within a style sheet. They can be used on a single line, or traverse multiple lines.
/* This is a single line comment */ /* A comment which spans over several lines */ /* The comment below is used to disable specific styling */ /* span { color: #eee; font-size: 2.5em; } */
CSS does not allow the nesting of the comments, which means a /*...*/ can't have another comment inside it.
CSS Comments - Single and Multi-Line comments
Following example demonstrates CSS comments (single and multi-line):
<html> <head> <style> div { background-color: rgb(194, 152, 233); /* Set the background color */ height: 50px; /* Set the height of div element */ width: 200px; /* Set the width of div element */ padding: 5px; /* Set the padding of div element */ border: 5px solid black; /* Set the border around the element */ } /* The p tag color is set to red font color */ p { color: red; font-size: 20px; } </style> </head> <body> <div> Checking for CSS comments. </div> <p>The styling on p tag has multi-line comments.</p> </body> </html>
CSS Comments - HTML And CSS comments
Here is an example showing html comment and CSS comment format:
Note: Remove the multi-line comment syntax from <p> to see the styling applied.
<html> <head> <style> div { background-color: rgb(194, 152, 233); /* Set the background color */ height: 50px; /* Set the height of div element */ width: 200px; /* Set the width of div element */ padding: 5px; /* Set the padding of div element */ border: 5px solid black; /* Set the border around the element */ } /* p { color: red; font-size: 20px; } */ </style> </head> <body> <!-- This is an html comment format --> <div> Checking for CSS comments. </div> <p>The styling is commented so its not applied on p tag.</p> </body> </html>
